How does Turnoff actually work?
When you try to open a site on your block list, Turnoff hijacks the tab and plays a turn-off flow instead — a wall of deeply unsexy memes, or a calm breathing sequence, whichever style you picked. By the time it is done, the urge is usually gone. You then choose: "I'm turned off" or "Open anyway" — no lock, no punishment, just a conscious choice.
Which browsers and devices does it work on?
Chrome and Edge on desktop via the browser extension, and iPhone via the Turnoff app, which brings Safari blocking plus a system-wide layer that covers every browser on the device. Mac and Android are on the way.
Do you track what I browse?
No. The blocking happens locally in your browser — we never see your browsing history. We only store the outcome of an interruption (did you resist or open anyway) and the site that triggered it, so your dashboard stats work. No ads, no data sales.
What if I really need to open a blocked site?
You can. Every interrupt ends with an "Open anyway" button. Turnoff is a pattern-interrupt, not a prison — the point is to make the compulsive moment conscious, not to trap you.
Can I choose which sites get blocked?
Yes. Turnoff ships with a solid default list of adult sites, and you can add your own from the dashboard at any time.
Can I change what the interruption looks like?
Yes. Pick your turn-off style on the dashboard: the meme chaos, a calm stoic flow, and more. You can set one style for blocked sites and a different one for the panic button, and tune how each flow plays.
What is the panic button?
Your turn-off flow, one tap away, before you have even opened anything. When you feel the urge, hit it in the app or on the dashboard and the interruption runs on demand. Resisting counts toward your streak.
What does it cost?
Turnoff is a subscription: €3.99 per month or €24.99 per year, with a 3-day free trial. You can cancel any time from your dashboard.
