How does TURNOFF actually work?
The moment you open a site on your block list, TURNOFF takes over the tab and shows you something unsexy instead. Weird, awkward, the exact opposite of what you came for. By the time it is over, the urge is usually gone. Then you choose: "I'm turned off" or "Open anyway". No lock, no punishment, just a conscious decision.
Which browsers and devices does it work on?
Chrome, Safari and Edge on the computer (Chrome and Edge with the browser extension, Safari on Mac with the Mac app), and iPhone and Android with the TURNOFF app. On iPhone the app also adds a system layer that covers every browser on the device, not only Safari. On Android it covers every browser and app on the phone.
How do I block porn on my iPhone?
Get the TURNOFF app from the App Store. It brings the interruption to Safari, and it can add a system level Screen Time layer that covers every other browser on the phone too. Setup takes about two minutes and the app walks you through it.
How do I block porn on Android?
Get the TURNOFF app from Google Play. It blocks adult sites in every browser and app on the phone, incognito included, and shows your TURNOFF flow instead. Setup takes about two minutes and the app walks you through it.
How do I block porn sites on Chrome or Edge?
Install the TURNOFF extension from the Chrome Web Store or Edge Add-ons and sign in once. From then on, every site on your block list turns into an interruption instead of loading. One tip: allow the extension in Incognito during setup, because Chrome and Edge keep extensions out of private windows by default.
Does it work in Incognito and private browsing?
Yes. On desktop you flip one switch during setup to allow the extension in Incognito, and the dashboard shows you where. On iPhone the Screen Time layer works system wide, and while it is on, Safari hides private browsing entirely. On Android the filter covers incognito tabs too.
Do you track what I browse?
No. The blocking happens locally in your browser, so we never see your browsing history. We only store the outcome of an interruption (did you resist or open anyway) and the site that triggered it, so your dashboard stats work. No ads, no data sales.
What if I really need to open a blocked site?
You can. Every interruption ends with an "Open anyway" button. TURNOFF is here to make the compulsive moment a conscious one, not to lock you out of your own browser.
Can I choose which sites get blocked?
Yes. TURNOFF comes with a solid default list of adult sites, and you can add your own in the dashboard at any time.
Can I change what the interruption looks like?
Yes. Pick your TURNOFF style in the dashboard: memes, stoicism, disgust and more. You can set one style for blocked sites and a different one for the panic button, and tune how each one plays.
What is the panic button?
It is for the moment the urge hits before you have opened anything. Tap it in the app or in the dashboard and the TURNOFF interruption runs on demand. Resisting counts toward your streak.
Is TURNOFF one of those anti-gooning tools?
Yes, and probably the most literal one. A gooning session needs a browser tab, and TURNOFF takes that tab over the moment it opens. Instead of settling in, you get something so unsexy that the session is over before it starts.
Can I block Reddit, X or other sites that pull me back in?
Yes. The default list covers adult sites, but the block list is yours: add Reddit, X or anything else in the dashboard and it gets the same treatment.
Can I just uninstall it when the urge hits?
You could, which is exactly why TURNOFF does not pretend to be a prison. The interruption works because it lands in the seconds between impulse and action, before uninstalling is even a thought. If you want extra friction on iPhone, turn on the Screen Time layer: while it runs, iOS locks the Safari extension toggles.
